Graffiti Found Denouncing Confederate General Winder

Greg Bassett

Salisbury Independent

The historical marker commemorating Confederate General John Winder has drawn graffiti chalked on the steps and nearby sidewalk of the Wicomico County Courthouse.

The marker was removed from the courthouse lawn years ago and put on Main Street in Downtown Salisbury.

Phrases ranged from “Tear Down Winder” and Winder is Scum to “Lynching Happened Here”.

That last referred to the lynching of the 1931 lynching of Matthew Williams an African Americans accused of murder.

The battle over Winder heated up this year when there were calls for removal of the historical marker.

Winder oversaw the notorious Confederate prison system for captured Union soldiers during the Civil War.
