BALTIMORE (AP) - Weeks after signing same-sex marriage into law,Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley will address a conference on Catholicism and gay rights.
O'Malley, a Roman Catholic, is expected to speak about efforts in Maryland to provide equal protection under the law at New Ways Ministry's conference in Baltimore on Friday.
The Mount Rainier-based group supported the same-sex marriage legislation, which now faces a referendum drive challenge. Baltimore's Catholic archbishop issued a statement this week noting that the group does not speak for the church.
Other speakers at the three-day conference include former Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, retired Australian Bishop Geoffery Robinson and Barbara Johnson, a lesbian denied Communion at her mother's funeral.
