Gas Fired Plant for Data Center Gets Unexpected Opposition

delawarejobsnow.org

The gas-fired power unit that would be attached to the proposed data center on the University of Delaware campus just got another opponent.

The UD Faculty Senate voted 43-to-0 in favor of a resolution that opposes construction of the 279-megawatt facility.

The resolution says that the plant is inconsistent with the values of the university and would further damage the university’s relationship with residents in the surrounding community.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the Faculty Senate does not have any authority to change the deal with The Data Centers LLC.

The company wants to build a data center on the 43 acres of the former Chrysler site which is the Science Technology and Advanced Research Campus.

Eight faculty members abstained from voting including Vice Provost for Research Charles Riordian, who sits on the working group examining the data-center proposal.
