Frontier Airlines Ends Flights from Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Frontier Airlines is discontinuing its service to Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

The low-cost carrier has offered flights between the airport and Denver since May 2010. Airport spokeswoman Jessica Wharton says Frontier's last flight out of Newport News will be Jan. 6.

Wharton says the airline had planned to temporarily suspend flights for the winter but decided to include Newport News among 10 cities where it is discontinuing service as part of a broader strategy to enter larger markets.

Frontier's departure will leave Newport News with only Delta and US Airways providing commercial passenger service, with nonstop flights to Atlanta, Charlotte and Philadelphia between them.
