CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) - A former Cambridge police officer has been accused of making threats to attack the police department's headquarters.

The Star Democrat of Easton  reports that 47-year-old Matthew R. Collins was arrested and charged Tuesday with making a threat of mass violence and second-degree assault.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office says in charging documents that a deputy received a text message from Collins that implied the former officer was intending to attack the headquarters and kill a member of the administrative staff.

Authorities say they later determined the threat was credible.

Charging documents say Collins was suspended from his position at the Cambridge Police Department in April 2011 and dismissed by resignation under unfavorable circumstances in March 2012.

It is unclear whether Collins has an attorney.
