57 foals were auctioned off yesterday in Chincoteague as part of 91st annual pony swim from Assateague Island.
The auction raised over $151-thousand which will go to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the average price was around $26-hundred with the average age of nearly 3 months.
The Legacy Group put $21-thousand dollars to buy back two three-month old fillies.
The paper reports there were 6 buy backs totaling nearly $50-thousand
Those not sold return to Assateague Island for another year.
The annual pony swim was made famous by author Marguerite Henry in her 1940’s novel, “Misty of Chincoteague.”
