The first rabid family pet in Worcester County has contracted rabies after a fight with a raccoon.

Health officials say that the symptoms developed last week and the pet was euthanized by Worcester County Animal Control.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the health department says several members of the family were exposed to the dog and given the appropriate medical assessments.

The health department reports there have been a high number of rabid animals in Worcester County with 43 confirmed cases.

These included not only the dog but 37 raccoons.

There have also been 36 other suspect cases of rabies where the animal was not tested.
