CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A horse in western Albemarle County has tested positive for a neurological disease that's caused by a virus.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says a boarding stable where the 14-year-old gelding is located is under quarantine.
The department says the horse showed symptoms of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy on Jan. 31 and is now stable.
Initial findings of an epidemiological investigation show that one exposed horse left the stable with the last two weeks. That horse went out of state.
The department is monitoring the situation.
The disease is often fatal. Symptoms may include a fever, nasal discharge, wobbly gait and hind-end weakness.
