Farmers Markets Could Soon Be Taking Food Stamps

Delmarva’s farmers markets could soon be taking food stamps.

In the past many have been able to accept vouchers for the Women, Infants and Children’s program and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

But farmers for years have not had the technology to take vouchers from the Electronic Benefit Transfer System that is used to provide food stamp benefits.

The Salisbury Daily Timesreports that the US Department of Agriculture is expected to hand out $4 million in grants to state agencies throughout the nation to provide that technology.

Delaware will receive $54-hundred while Maryland will get $67-thousand.

Pat Hines with the Maryland Department of Human Resources…told the paper that the point of the food stamp program is to enable lower income families to get access to healthy food.
