DOVER, Del. (AP) - The state Board of Education has approved an expansion for Newark Charter School, clearing the way for plans to add high school grades and enroll more students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the board voted unanimously on Thursday in favor of the expansion.
The decision comes after state Education Secretary Lillian Lowery initially delayed the vote The American Civil Liberties. Union of Delaware had argued in a letter to Lowery that the Newark Charter plan would contribute to the "re-segregation" of public schools.
In her recommendation last week to the board, Lowery said the expansion should be allowed as long as Newark Charter met certain conditions to diversify its student body.
