Essay: Black Brothers

family photo

It seems that every few weeks there is another video or another report of a young black man who has died. They range from Freddie Gray who died from a fatal spinal injury while in police custody to Trayvon Martin who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. Each case is unique and the details can vary. 23 year-old Diamond Holton, a Communications Arts major at Salisbury University and a Washington D.C. resident, reflects on the impact these deaths have had on her and her community.

Black Brothers

To my black brothers in hoodies

Drinking Arizonas and eating Skittles

To my black brothers who wanna feel the beat so they turn their music loud

To my black brothers who ask politely just to be left alone

To my black brothers who can't even turn around before being shot off their thrones

To my black brothers who laid in the street, slain with blood stains as heartfelt mothers called their name

I am your black sister and I just want to say Good Morning

Because there are others so eager to tell you Good Night.
