Entrance Reopened After Courthouse Shooting in New Castle County

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The side entrance to the New Castle County Courthouse lobby has reopened for the first time since a fatal shooting inside the doorway in February 2013.

The Wilmington News Journalreports the entrance reopened Tuesday without fanfare. A white picket fence had blocked access to the door from the outside, reminding people of the shooting for the past 18 months.

Now there is a new security configuration at the courthouse. Lobby doors near the parking garage are now a one-way exit, separating those entering the courthouse from those who are exiting.

Court Administrator Patricia Griffin says the three-month, $575,000 lobby renovation was part of an overhaul of courthouse security.

Christine Belford and Laura Mulfod were killed in 2013. Shooter Thomas Matusiewicz then exchanged gunfire with security officers before killing himself.
