Drowning at Assateague Island National Seashore

Don Rush

A swimmer drowned over the weekend at Assateague Island National Seashore.

Authorities say while 28-year old Paul Somroy was taking a swim on the beach at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night he indicated to a friend that he was having trouble.

Liz Davis with the National Park Service told the Salisbury Daily Times that the friend lost contact with him and tried unsuccessfully to find him.

Eventually one of the two National Park Rangers found Somroy who had been the water for around 45 minutes.

After being transported to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin he was pronounced dead at a 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
