Dispute Arises Over Shooting Death of Man in Wheel Chair

creative commosn

The family of a man in wheel chair who was shot dead by Wilmington police on Wednesday is disputing a claim that he had a gun.

There is a cell phone video by a witness with an officer holding a rifle or shotgun at the man and screaming for him to drop the gun and hands up.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the man who appears to be bleeding and trying to get up eventually slides his hand up his thigh toward his waist when officers open fire.

No gun is visible in the video posted on YouTube.

Police say that 28 year-old Jeremy McDole was armed and reaching for a weapon.

Authorities also say they got a 911 call that a man had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was armed.

But his family held a news conference calling for a federal investigation.

McDole’s mother Phyllis said her son was not armed and would not harm himself.
