Delmarva Braces for Effects of Hurricane Matthew

weather underground

As Hurricane Matthew approaches from the south those along the Delmarva Coast line are getting prepared.

In Rehoboth Beach officials began removing 175 benches along the boardwalk and Rehoboth Avenue.

Tony Pratt, Delaware’s state shoreline and waterway administrator, told the Wilmington News Journal that for the moment the storm is expected to be well south of the Delmarva Peninsula.

But he adds there is still great uncertainty.

High winds, storm surge and big waves are the main concern.

Pratt adds that for Sussex County the problem is more rain with the roadside ditches already filled from the last downpour.

The Associated Press reports that the 47th annual United States Sailboat Show is on schedule to begin in Annapolis.

The show is set to start Thursday.

While Hurricane Matthew created concerns about potentially interfering with the show, organizers say they're set to open the show on schedule. It's the second consecutive year that weather threatened to be a disruption.

More than 200 boats are in the water at Annapolis City Dock and Harbor and hundreds of on-land exhibitors were moving in Wednesday.

Organizers say Thursday's opening will be the largest. It runs through Monday.

Maryland Lower Eastern Shore

In the Tri-County area of the Maryland Lower Shore officials expect to see the effects of the storm on Saturday with heavy rains and wind.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports warnings have not yet been issued yet for the mid-Atlantic region.

James Hamilton with emergency services in Worcester County told the paper that the biggest concern was downed trees along with possible flooding near the Pocomoke River.

To the south on the Virginia Eastern Shore the Virginia Pilot reports that officials are expressing some relief that the storm could miss the region.

A mandatory evacuation for at least one island off the coast has been cancelled.

But the region is preparing just in case.

The newspaper reports that bottled water is being stocked and generators have shown up at Home Depots in the South Hampton area.
