Delawareans React to Change in U.S.-Cuba Relations

It was like the fall of the Berlin Wall.

That was the reaction of Wilmington Council member Sammy Prado as he watched president Obama announce that the United States would restore full diplomatic relations with Cuba.

Prado’s mother left Cuba in 1961 under a special program for kids.

This week’s announcement now opens up the potential for Delaware students to travel to Cuba as well as opportunities for Delaware businesses on the Caribbean Island.

Collette Gaiter, a University of Delaware associate professor, told the Wilmington News Journal that tourism and student exchanges were clearly at the top of list for the First State.

Only one group of students has traveled to Cuba in over 90 years of the study-abroad program’s history.
