The Wilmington News Journal reports that these are the results of the Smarter Balanced Assessments given to grades 3 through 8.

The paper reports that 45 percent of students were proficient in math in 2017 compared with 44 percent the year before.

Meanwhile, in English the tests found 54 percent were proficient compared with 55 percent in 2016.

While the percentage went down the number of students rose by 285.
