A 2003 survey has found that nearly one in six adults in Delaware are functionally illiterate.
The study by the international non-profit ProLiteracy also found that half of the state’s third-graders struggle to read.
In addition, the Wilmington News Journal reports that the study found 11 percent of Delaware’s adults lack basic literacy skills.
The paper reports that the National Bureau of Economic Research also found that children of low literacy skills have a 72 percent change of being at lowest reading levels.
There is an effort under the non-profit Literacy Delaware to improve reading skills including immigrants or English language learners.
