Delaware State Treasurer Race Turns Nasty

campaign photo

The race for state treasurer in Delaware has just gotten personal.

An aide to the Democratic candidates Sean Barney said that his Republican rival Ken Simpler lacks “the character and the qualifications to do the job.”

It is just the latest salvo in a campaign that saw Barney replace outgoing state Treasurer Chip Flowers who decided not to seek reelection.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Drew Wilson, Barney’s campaign manager, made the comment in an email after Barney’s campaign accused Simpler of attacking and demeaning the Democrat’s military record.

Meanwhile, Simpler’s campaign manager Jim Gibbons went after Barney’s campaign for mudslinging and personal attacks.

The News Journal reports that its sources in both parties say the back and forth is evidence that there is some concern within the Democratic ranks about the race.
