The Laurel School District is expecting a special team of financial advisers…to help officials fill a projected spending gap of $106-thousand that threatens the district’s budget.
Among the causes are slumping tax receipts and what the state’s Education Department staff -- has called -- a pattern of inaction on the part of district leaders.
The Delaware Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery invoked special powers to send a financial Recovery Team to Laurel.
With the Secretary’s approval the team has the authority to examine the district books and make financial policy changes without the approval of the district’s superintendent or school board.
The team also has the right to pre-approve any district expenditures.
