The Low-Wage Worker Taskforce in Delaware heard activists and workers tell them that increasing the minimum wage will not hurt hiring in the First State.
The hearing was held at the Chase center in Wilmington where around a 100 people showed up.
Harry Way, who is head of maintenance at a Wilmington McDonalds, told the panel that while he makes $8.25 an hour – 75 cents above the state’s minimum wage -- it was not nearly enough to live on.
He said that sometimes he goes without eating to make ends meet.
The taskforce was created to study the impact of raising the minimum wage on low income jobs and recommendations for the fast food, retail, janitorial and security industries.
