WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington resident and Olympic swimmer Andrew Gemmell won't advance to the finals of the 1,500 meter freestyle event in London.

The 21-year-old swam in the qualifying heat Friday and placed ninth. The top eight swimmers advance to Saturday's final. Gemmell's teammate Connor Jaeger of New Jersey came in seventh and will swim again Saturday.

Gemmell graduated from the Charter School of Wilmington in 2009 and is attending the University of Georgia, where he is majoring in economics. His father is a swim coach and his mother is an accountant.
