Delaware Officials Mark Veterans Day in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - Delaware's elected officials are joining with veterans groups for the annual Veterans Day Ceremony in New Castle.

Gov. Jack Markell planned to join all three members of Delaware's congressional delegation and other officials Monday for the ceremony at the foot of the Delaware Memorial Bridge honoring the military service of America's veterans.

The National Veterans Day Committee in Washington has designated Veterans Day in New Castle as a National Veterans Day Regional Site for the nation's 60th annual Veterans Day celebration.

This year's ceremony in Delaware marks the 22nd year of participation along with 54 similarly recognized sites across the country.

WW II Memorial Unveiled

A granite memorial to honor for veterans of World War Two was unveiled this weekend in Dover.

After the Delaware Department of State, Veterans Commission and General Assembly brought the project to fruition on Saturday t. Gov. Matt Denn said it was amazing that it took the state so long to do it.

The three-column stone monument is located on the southeast corner of Legislative Hall with a center portion that is around 8 feet high.

There are also medal commemorating the end of the war in the European and Pacific theaters.

One of the veterans in attendance 91 year old George Harris who service in North African and France told the Wilmington News Journal that the memorial was important to him and that he considered himself lucky.
