Delaware Legislation to Decriminalize Small Amounts of Marijuana
DOVER, Del. (AP) - Democratic lawmakers in Delaware have introduced a bill that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Under the bill Thursday, possession of up to an ounce of marijuana by a person 21 years or older would no longer be a crime.
But anyone caught smoking pot in a public place would be assessed a civil fine of $100.
Possessing more than an ounce of marijuana could still result in criminal prosecution.
Under current Delaware law, possession of even small amounts of marijuana is punishable by up to six months in prison and a $1,150 fine.
The bill, which has more than a dozen Democratic co-sponsors, has been assigned to the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee
