Delaware Governor Celebrates Affordable Housing Initiative

Official photo

Governor Jack Markell was pushing state-backed affordable house yesterday as he made a tour of some luxury apartments being built in Seaford.

These apartments with their waterfront view of the Nanticoke River stood in contrast to another apartment Markell visited that was a small second floor unit that smelled of urine.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the visit yesterday was part of the governor’s effort to show off the use of state and federal grants and loan guarantees for affordable housing.

The idea is to persuade private developers to charge below-market rates as opposed to government built housing.

The paper also reports that the state has invested taxpayer dollars into revitalizing the downtown area.
