Delaware GOP Offers School Safety Proposals

Delaware’s GOP lawmakers are calling for every school in the First State to have a crisis button that can alert authorities to an emergency.

In addition they want to create a $5 million state fund for school safety grants to address security and gun violence.

The proposals are a response to the deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left 20 children dead.

The Republican proposals are markedly different from Governor Jack Markell and

Democratic State lawmakers who called for a ban on military-style assault weapons, limits on magazines and mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the Governor’s office says he believes the GOP proposals are a good faith effort to address a serious problem.
