Delaware Electric Cooperative to Construct Solar Farm Near Georgetown

Officials for Delaware Electric Cooperative, say within weeks, a solar farm will begin the installation process near Georgetown.

20-acres of solar panels, which were manufactured in Delaware, will be installed west of Georgetown. DEC officials say the company is finalizing the land purchase. The construction will create 40 temporary jobs and the four-megawatt solar park will provide energy to 500 homes.

Officials for the member-owned electric utility, say the $14 million dollar project could be completed by early 2013, and ground-breaking for the project is expected in the spring.

The project is not expected to immediately impact member rates, but officials say eventually, the power generated by the solar park will offset energy purchases from the wholesale market.
