Delaware City Voters to Decide Annexation Today

sasaki.com

Voters in Delaware City will go to the polls today to decide whether to expand the city limits to incorporate a major residential and retail project near a former military base.

At stake is 325 acres that would include a 150-slip marina along with a restaurant and hotel.

In addition there would be nearly 500 residential units.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the annexation would allow the city to diversify it tax base and bring in more revenue.

But the paper reports there are some who are worried about the impact on the region and the town’s finances.

The development is overseen by the Fort DuPont Redevelopment and Preservation Corporation formed by the state created in 2014.

Its goal is to upgrade the fort built in 1899 as well as area around the former military base.

Today’s election also includes races for the city council.

The polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Delaware City Library.
