Delaware AG Wants Lower Prices for Heroin Antidote (Update)

In the fight against heroin addiction the Delaware Attorney General want to slash the cost of the drug’s anti-dote.

Delaware officials say 10 lives have been saved this year since the antidote Naloxone for heroin overdoses was put in the pockets of officers in the Ocean View, Middletown and New Castle County police departments.

These included a 35 year old Wilmington man who was found unconscious by his roommate and a 32- year old woman in Ocean View who was given it twice within a 10 hour period.

Attorney General Matt Denn says he wants the California maker of the drug Amphastar to provide rebates for local Delaware entities for its nasal form known as Narcan.

After being criticized for raising Narcan's price by about 50 percent last year, the manufacturer gave discounts to Ohio and New York agencies, and has publicly said it will consider requests from other states.

New Castle County Police Chief Colonel Elmer Setting told the News Journal that if the price were lower every agency in the state would be using it.
