Death of Joyner-Francis Could Not Have Been Anticipated

The sudden cardiac death of Amy Joyner-Francis after a fight in a bathroom at the Howard High School of Technology could not have been predicted.

That was the testimony of a pediatric cardiologist yesterday during the trial of three teenagers involved in the altercation.

The three are being tried as juveniles with one facing negligent homicide charges.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the testimony of Dr. Richard Ringel, a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, was part of the defense assertion that 17-year old Trinity Carr should not be held criminally liable.

Video of last April’s altercation from a bystander shows Carr punching and kicking Joyner-Francis who had fallen to the floor.

Last week the state medical examiner said…the sudden cardiac arrest was the result of the cardiac defect and the fight.
