LEWES, Del. (AP) - The University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean and Environment is hosting a manned submersible to be used for deep-sea research.
WBOC-TV reports that students will be able to board the OceanGate-created Cyclops 1, a vessel that can travel almost 550 yards underwater.
The college's acting dean Mohsen Badiey says the school will use the submersible during the fall semester ahead of a potential longer-term agreement and collaboration.
Badiey says the vessel will give students valuable hands-on experiences, as well as offer the college's faculty more opportunities to conduct research.
Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate, a privately held company, says the submersible can fit five people and is driven by a PlayStation game controller.
Cyclops 1 will begin making dives in the Delaware Bay in October.
