Cover Crop Enrollment to be Announced Today in Maryland

Don Rush

TIMONIUM, Md. (AP) - Maryland officials will be announcing the state's latest cover crop enrollment figures.

Gov. Martin O'Malley, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance will be attending the Maryland State Fair on Thursday.

The new cover crop numbers are scheduled to be announced at the fair.

The state's cover crop program gives grants to farmers who plant the crops immediately after the summer harvest. Cover crops like wheat and barley absorb unused nutrients and control soil erosion. They also help protect water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
