FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) - Residents in Falls Church, Virginia, have voted for new names at a high school now named after a Confederate military leader.
Residents voted Saturday on options to rename J.E.B. Stuart High School.
In July, the Fairfax County School Board voted to rename the school after a contentious debate over the issue.
There were about 70 names on the ballot. Andy Anderson was a star football player who graduated in 2001. He became an Army corporal and was killed by mortar fire in Iraq in 2006. His name received 164 votes.
Some names received more than 450 votes. They included Stuart, Peace Valley, Barbara Rose Johns and Justice Thurgood Marshall.
The school's superintendent will make a recommendation to the school board on the top names that received votes Saturday.
