Local Chincoteague officials are expressing concerns over the new beach plans for Assateague Island.

The plans for the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge produced by federal officials would move Assateague’s recreational beach to the north.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that former Chincoteague Planning Director William Neville told local town officials that there are concerns about the resiliency.

Neville is moving on to take a job with Ocean City.

The Daily Times reports that officials said protecting the southern portion of Assateague Island was essential otherwise Chincoteague would be doomed.

The Chincoteague Town Council and the town’s beach access committee decided during a meeting earlier this month that they will be sending a letter with their concerns to a number of agencies.

These include the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
