Civil Rights Figure Reverend Maurice Moyer Dies at Age 93

A giant of the civil rights movement, who marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior died yesterday in Christiana Hospital yesterday.

93 year Reverend Maurice Moyer lived in New Castle with his wife of more than 65 years Vivian Cleopatra.

He was part of the historic 1963 march on Washington where King delivered his I have a Dream speech…as well as participating in the treacherous march in Selma, Alabama.

James Gilliam Sr, a longtime civil rights activist and founder of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League, told the Wilmington News Journal that the nation had lost a great warrior for civil rights, who cannot be replaced.

Associated Press reports that Delaware Governor Jack Markel has ordered flags in Wilmington and New Castle County lower in honor of Moyer.

Moyer was former head of the Wilmington Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church.
