Christina Education Board Delays Agreement on School Consolidation

Christina School Board

The Christina School Board has put off a vote on a memorandum of understanding with the Governor John Carney over plans for school consolidation.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that one board member called the latest draft “power-play gut punch” that failed to focus on students.

Board member Elizabeth Paige said instead it focused on buildings and adults.

She wound up voting not to table the item because she was not sure if further negotiations with the governor would make a difference.

The plan would shift students from five Wilmington schools to the Bancroft Elementary and Bayard Middle School.

The News Journal reports that while the plan does allocate funding it bars it from being spent on teachers and staff who will face a longer school year and school day as well as additional responsibilities.
