Christina District School Consolidation Plan Runs Into Opposition

Don Rush

A consolidation plan for the Christina School District is running into trouble.

The latest draft of the memorandum of understanding between the school board, Governor John Carney and the state Department of Education may have lost support from two board members.

The latest revisions could mean a postponement of tonight’s planned vote.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the plan includes shifting students from three elementary schools to Bancroft Elementary and Bayard Middle School.

But board member John Young said that revisions in the document were dramatic.

Meanwhile, board member Elizabeth Paige who did not attend last night’s meeting said she was concerned about the agreement failing to set aside additional money for teacher salaries.

The News Journal reports that the agreement bars funding for that purpose.
