Chicken Litter Manageable Despite Large Houses, Study Says

With large poultry operations beginning to spring up around Delmarva, Accomack County planners say that poultry litter issues should be manageable even for the big facilities.

The 22-page report says that if litter does become a problem there are a number of solutions.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that these include moving the litter out of the county and alternative energy uses.

After receiving the report the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to support studying nutrients that enter and leave the county.

Marine biologist Richard Snyder, head of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Eastern Shore Laboratory, told the board that there is bound to be a limit to how much the county can absorb.

The Daily Times reports that the commissioners recently adopted a new zoning ordinance imposing new regulations on the poultry operations.
