Call to Replace Name of Racist MD Univ. President on Stadium

public domain

BALTIMORE (AP) - The University of Maryland's president says the name of an ex-university president should come off the stadium at the flagship campus because of the man's racist beliefs.

Wallace D. Loh told the university community Monday in an email he is recommending that Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium be changed to Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

Byrd Stadium, where the school's football and lacrosse teams play, is named for H.C. "Curley" Byrd, who was president of the university from 1936 to 1954.

Loh said in his email that Byrd was an ardent proponent of "separate but equal" education.

Loh made a formal recommendation to the university's Board of Regents to consider the request. The board will do so at its meeting Friday.
