ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland lawmakers will be facing a shortfall of about $593 million under current projections when they work on the budget for the next fiscal year.
Warren Deschenaux, the Legislature's chief budget analyst, gave a briefing to the state's Spending Affordability Committee on Wednesday.
He says the state's economic outlook has not attained the expectations that the budget provided for last year. He says the influence of downsizing at the federal level is having an outsized influence in Maryland and Virginia, which have a high number of federal employees.
Maryland lawmakers will get a budget proposal in January, after Gov.-elect Larry Hogan, a Republican, takes office. They will then work on the budget for most of the 90-day legislative session, which begins in January. The next fiscal year begins in July.
