Book Dropped From Summer Reading List, Draws Protests in Cape Henlopen

Book Cover - Amazon

Librarians, some parents and teachers are protesting 6-to-1 decision in June by the Cape Henlopen School District board to pull a young-adult book off the summer reading list.

Entitled ”The Miseducation of Cameron Post” by Emily Danforth, the book’s main character is gay and it contains a number of expletives.

Some board members said they were reflecting the concerns of parents with the board president Spencer Brittingham saying it was the profanity.

But, Margie Cyr, chair of the Delaware Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee, told the Wilmington News Journal that families should not be able to impose their values on other families.

It was on the list of books read by rising honors and college prep-ninth graders were required to read and write papers about.

The book is still in the Cape Henlopen High School library.

The News Journal reports that the book is among the most complained about in the county with parents and board objecting to sexually explicit scenes and offensive language.
