Beefing Up Storm Infrastructure Along Delaware Coast

delaware bay, wikipedia.com

The Coastal dikes of northern Delaware are getting a second look by officials as efforts get underway to shore them after the damage left by Hurricane Sandy.

Last week Governor Jack Markell asked for $143 million from a proposed $60 billion supplemental bill on Capitol Hill for recovery efforts from the storm.

Delaware plans to use $15 million for aging and weakened dikes and dams in New Castle, Delaware City southwestern Sussex County and other parts of the state.

Another $30 million will be used for statewide stormwater and flood control improvements.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the New Castle City Council echoed these concerns.

Council President William Barthel noted that there was extensive damage to the Gambacorta Dike estimated at $940-thousand.

And he said he was pleased that there was an adjusted schedule for New Castle’s top priority dikes.

Meanwhile the Delaware general Assembly has already set aside $4.5 million for part of the dike project which could be eligible for another $3.5 million in federal recovery funds.
