REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) - Beach replenishment is nearing completion at the Indian River Inlet and moving north to Lewes.
TheNews Journalreports that work to repair erosion caused by Superstorm Sandy last year is already complete in Fenwick Island, Bethany, Dewey and Rehoboth beaches. The state received nearly $30 million in federal funds to restore the beaches to a width of about 200 feet from the surf line to the dunes.
The project started in Fenwick in July and has moved north town by town, bypassing the state parks, which are undeveloped.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the projects justified as hurricane storm risk management are meant to reduce damage to infrastructure. The next step is the installation of sand fences and planting of grasses to hold dunes together.
