Battle Brews Over Wicomico County Library

There is a standoff between Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver and County Library officials.

Culver issued a letter demanding that the library turn over 33-hundred square feet of space to store county voting machines.

That’s where the library’s Entrepreneur Center is located.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that library officials sent Culver a letter yesterday refusing to turn over the keys.

The letter said that they believed the space should solely be used for library purposes.

The paper reports that Culver says storing the voting machines would save the county up to $100-thousand a year and would only be temporary until a new $1.1 million Board of Election office is built.

The County Executive argued that the space is being underutilized since the County Council decided not to fund the Entrepreneur Center for a second year.

But Friends of Wicomico County Libraries are fighting back and sending out an email yesterday asking library supporters to write Culver and members of the County Council.

Culver told the Daily Times that he had heard from just 25 people as of yesterday morning.
