BALTIMORE (AP) - More than 1,000 people, including priests, bishops, cardinals, politicians and a representative of Pope Francis paid a final tribute to Cardinal William Keeler, who headed Archdiocese of Baltimore for 18 years.
Some 60 members of Keeler's family also attended the funeral service Tuesday afternoon of the former head of the oldest Roman Catholic diocese in the U.S. He died Thursday at age 86.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Keeler had an impact on the entire community. Former Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski says the cardinal had always been a shepherd to his flock.
The Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and Keeler's longtime friend, delivered the homily.
Keeler was interned in the crypt at the Baltimore Basilica.
