Author Speaks Out on Novel Cut From Cape Henlopen Reading List

Don Rush

Browseabout Books

As controversy swirls around the decision by the Cape Henlopen School board to drop a book about a teenager who discovers she is gay from the 9th grade summer reading list the Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach as been providing the novel for students and others want to read it.

The novel is entitled “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and is authored by Emily Danforth.

Susan McAnelly, the store manager says, her store was first contacted by a national group After Ellen when word first got out about the decision.

"The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Right now, we've given away over a hundred books. There've been donations not only from this group After Ellen, but there have also been huge donations from the  community -- many donations from Cape Henlopen school district teachers. It's been an overwhelming response from our community."

And, she adds, the demand for the book has been extremely high.

"Right now we have about 250 copies on order. We have no copies in the store, because everyone has been spoken for. Of those, 250 (on order) approximately 50 of them have been pre-purchased as donations. So, right now we're giving out IOU's for students who come in.
