Anti-Discrimination Gender Identity Bill in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A bill outlawing discrimination in Delaware based on gender identity has been filed in the state legislature.

The bill, filed Wednesday, adds gender identity to the existing list of protected non-discrimination categories, including race, age, marital status, creed, color, sex, handicap, sexual orientation and national origin.

The bill defines gender identity as a gender-related identity, appearance, expression or behavior of a person, regardless of the person's assigned sex at birth. It would prohibit discrimination against a person on the basis of gender identity in housing, employment, public works contracting, public accommodations, and insurance.

The bill says employers would be allowed to require workers to adhere to reasonable appearance standards but that they would have to allow an employee to appear, groom and dress consistent with his or her gender identity.
