Another Republican Seeks Pipkin State Senate Seat

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Steve Hershey says he will seek appointment to a vacant state Senate seat on the Eastern Shore.

The Queen Anne's County Republican made the announcement in a news release Friday.

He will be seeking the seat that is now open because Sen. E.J. Pipkin resigned last week.

Del. Michael Smigiel, R-Cecil, also is seeking the appointment.

The legislative district includes Caroline, Cecil, Kent and Queen Anne's counties. The Republican Central Committees from each county have 30 days from the senator's resignation to submit a name to Gov. Martin O'Malley to formally make the appointment. Pipkin's resignation was effective Monday.
