Annapolis Mayor-Elect Makes Appointments Despite Threats From City Council (Update)

campaign website

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The new mayor of Annapolis is being inaugurated.

Michael Pantelides will be sworn in Monday afternoon at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

Pantelides, a Republican, defeated Democratic incumbent Josh Cohen last month in a race that was considered for days too close to call.

Pantelides announced on Sunday the first appointments in his administration, despite talk on the City Council of possibly stripping the mayor's office of much of its power.

Pantelides said he was appointing Timothy Murnane as city attorney. He also appointed Rhonda Wardlaw to serve as the city's public information officer.

Murnane has been a trial attorney for more than 30 years and has served as a public defender in Anne Arundel County. The appointment of city attorney is subject to confirmation by the City Council.

Wardlaw has served as the city's public information officer since 2011 under Mayor Joshua Cohen. She also served in that role under Mayor Ellen Moyer.

Some City Council members have been discussing legislation to make the mayor's office largely ceremonial.
