29-year-old Vashti Harrison from Accomack County received an award Sunday for outstanding literary work for children from the 49th NAACP Image Awards.
Her book, ”Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History”, was published just last month.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that in her acceptance speech she said she dedicated the award to little girls and the black women of history.
In a recent interview with the paper she said she hoped the book would make young people aware of the many are opportunities that await them.
The NAACP Image Awards celebrate the achievements of people of color in field that range from television and music to literature and film as well as groups that use creative works to promote social justice.
